The Department of Energy (DOE) has sponsored
the publication of numerous documents about the Human Genome Project. Most of
these publications are available online (in HTML and pdf forms) and in print formats.
Several other entities also have published documents about the
project, many of which are included here.
Quick links to publications on this page:
U.S. DOE Human Genome Program
- Contractor-Grantee Workshop
Proceedings
(available online only)
- DOE Human Genome Program
Reports
(available online only)
- Human Genome News
(HGN) was the newsletter of the U.S. Human Genome Project from 1989 to 2002.
HGN was intended to facilitate communication among genome researchers and
to inform persons interested in genome research.
- Historical Documents (available
online only)
- Other Reports (available online only)
The U.S. Department of Energy's Genomics:GTL is a follow-up program
to the Human Genome Program. It will explore how genes, DNA regulatory
elements, and proteins function to create living systems.
- Access the full Genomics:GTL publications list here.
The Microbial Genome Program was initiated by the U.S. Department
of Energy in 1994 to study the DNA, or genetic material, of microbes
that
may
be
useful
in helping
DOE fulfill its missions.
- Access the full Microbial Genome Program publications list here.
Genetics and the HGP
Of special interest to the general public, particularly students and
educators.
- Primer: Genomics
and Its Impact on Science and Society: The Human Genome Project and
Beyond, (June 2008). This edition covers basic science,
the Human Genome Project, what we know so far, Next Steps in Genomic
Research, ELSI, medicine, benefits, and more. This primer is also available
in print form and in quick-download Acrobat
(pdf) format. For better quality, use the high-resolution
pdf.
- The Human Genome and Beyond (April 2003).
Two-page summary as a pdf file.
- Beyond
the Human Genome Project Poster (June 2003). Educational wall poster,
downloadable in pdf.
- Gene Gateway - Exploring Genes
and Genetic Disorders (2003). Collection of guides and tutorials designed
to help novice users get started with online resources and data on human chromosomes,
genes, and genetic disorders. See Gene
Gateway Web site.
- Human Genome Landmarks:
Selected Genes, Traits, and Disorders Poster (2002). Educational
wall poster of all 24 human chromosomes and selected genes that have been
mapped to them. Print and online versions available from Web site.
- Index to the Human Genome Working
Draft Sequence and Analysis articles from Nature and Science (February
2001) .
- Fact Sheet on the Human Genome Project (2001).
This 4-page document is an excellent handout with basic facts about the HGP.
It is a reprint of several articles from the November 2000 issue of Human
Genome News.
- (Archived) To Know Ourselves (1996), an overview
of the underlying science of the Human Genome Project; also available in Adobe
Acrobat format.
- Exploring Genetics Issues Relevant
to Minority Communities (August 2003). Two-page brochure as a pdf
file.
- Bloodlines: Technology Hits Home
A PBS documentary with partial funding from the Ethical, Legal, and
Social Issues of the U.S. Department of Energy Human Genome Program.
(June 2003).
- DOE Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues Abstracts Booklets (Available
online only.)
- Your Genes, Your Choices
(1997), a booklet describing the Human Genome Project, the science behind
it, and the ethical, legal, and social issues that are raised by the
project. Also mirrored on this site.
- Exploring the Impact of Genetic
Research on Minorities: DOE and Zeta Phi Beta sorority's National
Educational Foundation--article excerpted from Human Genome News (November
2001)
- Challenges and Impact of Human Genome
Research for Minority Communities Conference Proceedings (July 2000)
- Pathways and Barriers to Genetic Testing
and Screening: Molecular Genetics Meets the High-Risk Family --report
by Troy Duster (University of California) and Diane Beeson (California
State University, Hayward) (October 1997)
- ELSI
Bibliography (publications prior to 1995)
- The Human Genome Project: What
a Legal Assistant Needs to Know an article from the Journal
for Legal Assistants (August 2000).
- Judicature: Genes and Justice --entire
issue. Nov-Dec. 1999.
- Bridging the Gap Between Life
Insurer and Consumer in the Genetic Testing Era: The RF Proposal,
reprinted with permission of the Indiana Law Journal 74(4)
Fall 1999.
- The Judges' Journal of the American
Bar Association's "Genetics in the Courtroom" issue,
Summer 1997, Vol. 36:3
- Public Sector Genetic Services
in Florida and Georgia: Current Status and Potential Issues Raised
by the Human Genome Project by Ralph W. Trottier, Ph.D., J.D.
and Lee A. Crandall, Ph.D. A Final Report from"The Impact of
HGI Derived Technologies on Genetic Testing, Screening and Counseling:
Cultural, Ethical and Legal Issues" (July 1996).
- Genetic Privacy Act --A
draft bill written in 1995 by George Annas of the Boston University
School of Public Health to assist legislators. This bill proposed
that access to information in genetic data banks should be regulated
during sample collection, storage, disclosure, and use. Several state
lawmakers adapted language and concepts from the draft bill to write
proposals for legislation in their own states.
