DOCTOR’S SPECIALTY:
Carolyn O. Wilson Mbajekwe
Dr. Khadijah Jordan
OBGYN
WHEN STORY TOOK PLACE:
WHERE STORY TOOK PLACE:
June 2008
Chesapeake, Virginia
STORY:
Dr. Khadijah Jordan is a Chesapeake, Virginia-based obstetrician and gynecologist. A trailblazer and leader in the Hampton Roads healthcare community, Dr. Jordan is also Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She is the first woman to serve in this capacity in the history of Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and has been re-elected for a second term. She is also President-Elect of the Chesapeake Medical Society, a position that is a testament to the high regard and esteem in which Dr. Jordan is held by her peers.

Dr. Jordan epitomizes the spirit embodied in the idea of a medical hero. Chesapeake General is a preferred facility for expecting parents. The reason is simple. Dr. Jordan leads a staff that sincerely cares about the health and well-being of mothers and their newborns. They've created an environment that is state of the art, where patients have access to the latest advancements in the field of obstetrics, and one that at the same time is comfortable and nurturing. Dr. Jordan has also led efforts to make the latest procedures in women's healthcare available at Chesapeake General. For instance, she recently instituted Novasure Endometrial Ablations, a new procedure that provides women relief from menstrual complications, and in doing so improves the quality of their lives.

The same level of care, attentiveness, and innovation is reflected in Dr. Jordan's medical practice, which is situated right next door to Chesapeake General Hospital. Dr. Jordan's office is patient-friendly and state-of-the-art in every way.

At the center of all this is the person of Dr. Khadijah Jordan. In spite of her many achievements and accomplishments, Dr. Jordan is an amazingly humble and down-to-earth person. She has a special way with her patients. She talks to her patients and takes time to hear their concerns. Dr. Jordan treats her patients with such great dignity and respect. She always emphasizes overall healthcare and goes out of her way to make sure patients are educated about the broader scope of pregnancy and delivery, linking them with classes on a range of relevant topics, including childbirth, caring for newborns, breastfeeding, and CPR. One day while sitting in her waiting room, I overheard a patient refer to Dr. Jordan as an angel.

I was blessed to have this angel of a doctor in my life this past June when I gave birth to my son. Dr. Jordan stood by me and held my hand during a pregnancy and delivery that occurred during a period of great change and transformation in my life. She made an otherwise stressful situation both comfortable and rewarding.

Dr. Jordan is an inspiration to so many people. I speak for many women here in Hampton Roads when I say that Dr. Jordan is a model doctor, and indeed, a medical hero.

DOCTOR’S SPECIALTY:
Misty Richards
Dr. Catherine Roca
Psychiatry
WHEN STORY TOOK PLACE:
WHERE STORY TOOK PLACE:
It started in 2002 and is ongoing...
Bethesda, MD
STORY:
Dr. Catherine Roca is my hero. Not only is she one of the most caring, talented and brilliant psychiatrists I have ever met, but she is a genuinely compassionate person at heart. I met Dr. Roca while working under her supervision at the NIH during the summer of 2003. From the first day I interacted with Dr. Roca, I knew that she was special. Instead of acting like I was an obligation in her life, she embraced me as her mentee and truly inspired me to be the best person I can be. She empowered me through her example and really demonstrated intense commitment to both her career and family. She was the first female role model to show me that you can be beautiful, intelligent, and ambitious while striving to make your way in the fiercely competitive world of biomedical research. She has maintained her integrity throughout all the years that I have known her and maintained her intentional course to make an impact on this world.
At the time I met Dr. Roca, I was a fragile pre-medical student desperately trying to determine if I had what it took to be a great physician. Dr. Roca helped me believe in myself and encouraged me to go for what I want in this world. I once mentioned in passing that I really needed to take an MCAT prep course in order to do well on the MCATS. Unfortunately, I did not have the money for this, and Dr. Roca knew it. I was floored when I walked down the steps of my house one day to find an envelope on the ground. Apparently someone has slid a $1,200 check under my door with a little note saying that I should pay it forward. I wasn't surprised to see that Dr. Roca's name was signed at the bottom of the letter, but truly shocked that she believed in me enough to make such a gesture.
Dr. Roca has changed my life for the better. I did take the MCAT prep course and was accepted to medical school 4 years ago. I hope to become half as good of a doctor and person as Dr. Roca and to potentially impact another person's life the way she impacted mine. She is amazing.

STORY:
I was in my 30's and struggling to make ends meet. I was a single Mother of two boys. When I met this inspiring young Physician..
I was working in another physicians office where she came to work. I watched as she worked with patients and loved caring for them.. She then left the practice and started her own solo practice where I went to work for her..
She was such a hard worker trying to juggle having a family and making a place in the community with her work as a Retinal Surgeon.. She would travel to Chicago to work with some of the finest surgeons, sharpening her surgical skills. As I worked with her my admiration grew, she gave me confidence in myself and I knew there was more out there for me. I just had to go out and find it. After four years with her ,helping her with her office, raising children and watching her go through many changes I moved on.. I grew as a person and went back to school. I finished with honors because of her and I continue to work in the Ophthalmology Field.. I wish I could thank her Today for all she did for me..

STORY:
Dr. Fox is my daughter and I's doctor. She is great at listening to patients' concerns and willing to implement traditional treatments in addition to more "new age" types of treatments such as herbal remedies. Unlike my previous doctor who was male, I feel like she really hears and understands me and my daughter. I greatly appreciate her approach to medical care.
