Wildfires burn intensely in Queensland, Australia in this true-color image collected by MODIS on October 31, 2001. Large blackened burn scars that can be seen intermittently across the eastern Australian countryside surround the fires. MODIS has thermal detectors uniquely designed to detect fires as hot as 500K without saturating, and it is being used by land managers in the U.S. to monitor and manage wildfires.
