On July 11, 2002, skies over eastern China were still thick with smoke and possible pollution. Numerous fires are burning in the southeast corner of the image, south of the Yangtze River in the mountainous northeastern part of the Zhejiang province. Pale sediment from the river is pouring into the Huang Hai (the Yellow Sea). At the top of the image, what is likely pollution from urban areas along the Yellow River mixed with smoke is packed into the valleys of the Shanxi and Henan Provinces.
