The State Department of Transportation opened a second cell phone waiting area at Honolulu International Airport to allow motorists to park and wait for passengers on arriving flights.

The Ewa cell phone waiting area, which is similar to what is being offered at some airports on the mainland, provides a place for motorists to park for free while they wait for a cell phone call from arriving passengers.

The Ewa cell phone waiting area is located on Service Road A near the Airport Post Office (intersection of Nimitz Highway and Aolele Street) and just a few minutes away from the airport terminal (see attached map).  The waiting area will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Airport officials believe the waiting area will make it convenient for those picking up arriving passengers and reduce traffic congestion fronting the baggage claim area. It will also eliminate the need for motorist to drive in loops around the airport waiting for arriving passengers to exit the baggage claim area.  Motorists will be allowed to wait up to an hour on the property.  Unattended vehicles will be cited and/or towed, and commercial vehicles will not be allowed to park there.

“The waiting area is another service we are very pleased to offer at Honolulu International Airport,” said state transportation director Brennon Morioka. “Drivers can now wait in a free parking area until arriving family and friends have collected their luggage and are ready for pick-up outside of baggage claim.”

In addition to this latest opening of the Ewa Cell Phone Waiting Area, the Diamond Head Cell Phone Waiting Lot has been opened since November of last year (see attached map).  The Diamond Head lot is located along Aolele Street between the Delta Airlines and United Airlines cargo facilities and also within close proximity to the airport terminals.
