Curriculum Guide

Homesteading: The Free Land Idea Activity Guide for Teachers Grades 4 through 6 is Curriculum Based booklet divided into seven Units. Each Unit contains theme, background material, glossaries, several activities, and educational objectives. The Units are aligned to Social Studies, Math, and Science Frameworks for Nebraska Schools and the Curricular Standards for Science in Kansas.  Many of the activities are designed to be be used for on-site visits. However, in many cases suggestions have been made so much of the material can be adapted for classroom use. For ease of downloading rather than provide a link to the entire Teacher Guide, links to PDF files of the individual Units are below.

Teaching with Historic Places

Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) uses properties listed in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places to enliven history, social studies, geography, civics, and other subjects. TwHP has created a variety of products and activities that help teachers bring historic places into the classroom.  Go here for the Teaching with Historic Places home page and here for a lesson dealing with Homestead National Monument of America.
