Louisiana's 3.5 million acres of coastal wetlands represent
about 40% of the coastal marshes in the continental U.S. Unfortunately,
Louisiana experiences about 80% of the nation's annual coastal wetland
losses. |
|
The Louisiana coast has lost over 1 million acres of wetlands since the 1930s, and that loss is expected to continue into the next few decades. It is estimated that, between 2000 and 2050, more than 430,000 acres of wetlands would be lost if no protective measures were taken. To combat this loss, Congress enacted the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA or Breaux Act) in 1990. Through the CWPPRA program, NOAA Fisheries, other federal agencies and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources develop and construct large-scale, multi-million dollar restoration projects in coastal Louisiana.
CWPPRA's objectives are met by:
- Slowing the high rate of wetlands loss in Louisiana
- Developing and utilizing the latest techniques in restoration
- Fostering partnerships with federal and state agencies, landowners and industry
- Incorporating a regionally-based approach to ecosystem restoration
