GSA Provides Smart Card SupportPosted March 11, 2004 When the National Mediation Board (NMB) decided to update their identification (ID) credentials to meet current security requirements, they called GSA. They hired GSA’s Center for Smart Card Solutions as project consultant. The NMB also asked GSA to redesign their new ID to conform to emerging federal credentialing standards. The NMB’s dual interface card will be recognized by other federal agency credential programs that conform to the governmentwide smart card interoperability specifications and can hold up to $200 of fare subsidies for use on the local mass transit system. The new IDs—to be rolled out in a few weeks—will use the same smart card format as the one in GSA’s National Smart Card ID project. Embedded in each NMB employee's card will be that individual's biometric information and picture, as well as a host of other agency-specific information. For more information on how GSA can support your agency's smart card initiative, contact Jim Schoening, with GSA’s Center for Smart Card Solutions, on (202) 501-7367.
