Abstract:Dr. Jarcho's principal fields of interest include internal medicine and medical history. He has published more than 200 articles and sixty book reviews on clinical medicine, pathology, the history of medicine, paleopathology, and cartography. A sizable part of the collection consists of correspondence relating to the subject of the history of medicine and to the activities of the National Library of Medicine.

Biographical Note

Dr. Saul Jarcho was born in New York City on October 25, 1906, and received his A.B. degree from Harvard University, a Master of Arts degree in Latin Literature from Columbia University, and his M.D. degree from Columbia in 1930. He then interned at the Lying-In Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York between 1930 and 1933. From 1934 until 1942 he was an instructor at The Johns Hopkins and Columbia Universities. During World War II he was assigned to duty at the Army Medical School and subsequently to the Medical Intelligence Division of the Office of the Surgeon General. His long association with the New York Academy of Medicine began in 1940, and he became Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine in 1967.

Dr. Jarcho's principal fields of interest include internal medicine and medical history. He has published more than 200 articles and sixty book reviews on clinical medicine, pathology, the history of medicine, paleopathology, and cartography. He has been an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the College of Physicians, the New York Historical Society, the Society of Tropical Medicine, and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM). The AAHM Garrison lecturer in 1963, he was also president of the Association from 1968-70.

Dr. Jarcho has been a consultant to several federal agencies. Among them are the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army, the National Institutes of Health, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Library of Medicine. From 1961-65 he was a member of NLM's Board of Regents.

Biographical data, correspondence, and reprints.

A sizable part of the collection consists of correspondence relating to the subject of the history of medicine and to the activities of the National Library of Medicine. The 1990 accession to the collection includes material on the history of Egyptian medicine, the Loeb Classical Library, and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Provenance

The papers of Dr. Saul Jarcho were first given to the National Library of Medicine by Dr. Jarcho in November, 1980. Additional accessions, extending the coverage of the collection through 1981, were received and added to the collection in 1985 and 1986. An accession including files on Egypt, the Loeb Classical Library, and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was received in 1991.
