60th Celebration Held

On September 18, 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) commemorated its 60-year contribution to accelerating scientific discovery through the preservation and sharing of DOE R&D results. Historical exhibits and a program for retirees, former and current employees, and business and community leaders was held at the OSTI facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Jeffrey Salmon, Associate Under Secretary of Science, U.S. Department of Energy; Eugene Garfield, Chairman Emeritus of Thomson Scientific; and Walter Warnick, OSTI Director, were speakers. U.S. Congressman Zach Wamp delivered pre-recorded video comments. During the event, the launch of DOepatents (www.osti.gov/doepatents) a new Web site developed by OSTI, was announced.

A free community lecture and reception celebrating the 60th anniversary was held that evening at the American Museum of Science and Energy (www.amse.org). Dr. Eugene Garfield presented “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants – tracing the impacts of information retrieval systems on science policy.” Dr. Garfield is a pioneer in information retrieval systems and inventor of Science Citation Index. He is founding publisher/editor of The Scientist, author of over 1,000 articles and books, and has lectured widely throughout the world. Also as part of its 60th anniversary, OSTI is participating in the museum’s Places & Spaces Mapping Science exhibit (www.osti.gov/60th/datamaps). OSTI’s Mapping Astrophysics from DOE R&D Results will be on display through January 7, 2008. The illustrations in OSTI’s display are based on a key DOE database, Information Bridge (www.osti.gov/bridge).
