The transition between fertile plain and desert in the southern United States is clear in this true-color image, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on August 26, 2004. The bright green and tan freckles in Kansas and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles down the right side of the image are agricultural fields. In the center of the image, the light green of agriculture gives way to the rich dark green of forests in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, top, and New Mexico, bottom. On the west side of the Rockies, the characteristic tans and pinks of the expansive southwestern desert begin. Running from north to south through New Mexico is the Rio Grande, its banks lined in green vegetation. The pink Painted Desert of northern Arizona and southern Utah can be seen along the left edge of the image.
