The Nation’s most populous region, the South, had 36.6 percent of the population in 2007. More than 23 percent (23.2) of the Nation’s population resided in the West, 22.0 percent in the Midwest, and 18.1 percent in the Northeast.
In 2007, 43.1 percent of violent crimes occurred in the South, 23.1 percent took place in the West, 19.4 percent were in the Midwest, and 14.5 percent occurred in the Northeast.
Over 45 percent (45.8) of the Nation’s estimated total of murders occurred in the South. The West had 21.8 percent of murders, followed by the Midwest, with 19.1 percent, and the Northeast, with 13.4 percent.
More than 42 percent (42.7) of the Nation’s estimated property crime offenses occurred in the South, with 23.8 percent in the West, 21.3 percent in the Midwest, and 12.2 percent in the Northeast.
In 2007, over 46 percent (46.7) of the Nation’s estimated total of burglaries occurred in the South. The West had 22.2 percent of burglaries, followed by the Midwest, with 20.6 percent, and the Northeast, with 10.5 percent.
