Center for Delivery, Organization, and Markets (CDOM): Staff Biographies

Herbert Wong, Ph.D.

Herbert S. Wong, Ph.D., is an economist who has analyzed issues related to pricing and competition in the market for physician services; explored service utilization, enrollment, and competition in managed care organizations; examined the interaction of hospital and physician costs; and investigated the determinants of hospital payments. He is currently examining issues related to changes in standards of care and factors affecting physician practice styles.

Before coming to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Dr. Wong taught courses in industrial organization, microeconomic theory, and statistics at Northwestern and Loyola Universities. He also worked as a research assistant at the American Medical Association (AMA), and served as a special assistant for health policy analysis at the Office of Management and Budget.

Dr. Wong has published in Health Care Financing Review, Journal of Health Economics, and Medical Care, and he has refereed papers for the American Journal of Public Health and Inquiry. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in economics from Northwestern University. He earned his B.A. in economics from Brandeis University.
