The northeastern United States was entirely covered with snow on February 2, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. In the upper left corner of the image, Lake Erie and Lake Huron are covered in ice. Lake Ontario, the easternmost Great Lake, remains mostly clear, though white ice rings its shores. The snow outlines land features, making things pop out of the image that may not be visible in other circumstances. Here, the river systems of New York look like winter-bare trees branching through the state, and the Appalachian Mountains form a long curve through Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
