Late spring snow blankets New York in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image captured by the Aqua satellite on April 5, 2004. Snow still covers the tops of the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. MODIS also detected a few scattered fires, marked in red, particularly in the south where they have probably been set to clear land for agricultural purposes.
