Suburban cities exclude all metropolitan agencies associated with a principal city. Nonsuburban cities include law enforcement agencies in cities with less than 50,000 inhabitants that are not associated with a Metropolitan Statistical Area.

(A comparison of 2004 and 2005 data)

Violent crime increased 1.3 percent in suburban cities in 2005. In nonsuburban cities, violent crime increased 1.6 percent.
Property crime decreased 0.5 percent in suburban cities. In nonsuburban cities, property crime decreased 1.2 percent.
The two-year trend shows that murder offenses increased 3.1 percent in suburban cities and 2.6 percent in nonsuburban cities.
Incidents of robbery increased in suburban cities and nonsuburban cities, 2.5 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively.
