The Aqua MODIS instrument detected a number of fires, marked in red, on October 17, 2002. Some of the fires have visible smoke plumes, which appear as little blue-gray streaks drifting away from the point of fire. The fires are scattered throughout (clockwise from top left) Okalahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Tennessee, which is shown in the upper right corner, shows no fires. Running south between Arkansas and Louisiana on the left and Tennessee and Mississippi on the right is the Mississippi River, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico at the bottom of the image.
