K-13 Education Initiatives
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Education Program promotes the teaching of atmospheric, oceanographic, and hydrologic sciences through pre-college teacher training and instructional resource material development. It also promotes instructional innovation at the introductory college course level, hence the K-13 designation for the program. All programs promote activity directed towards greater human resource diversity in the sciences AMS represents. To date, over 100,000 teachers have received training and instructional resources, which have benefited millions of students. A special initiative, the AMS/NOAA Cooperative Program for Earth System Education (CPESE) is designed to enhance public understanding of the fluid Earth system emphasizing the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences and to promote activity that will result in greater human resource diversity in these sciences and in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
