Objectives: The primary objective of the sampling at surface water trends sites (North Sylamore Creek near Fifty Six, Arkansas; Yocum Creek near Oak Grove, Arkansas; and Buffalo River near Boxley, Arkansas) is to contribute to a national-level study of water-quality and biological-community trends. A secondary objective is to provide some information about the temporal variability of water quality and biological communities at sites in the Ozark Plateaus.

Approach: Water quality samples have been collected at various frequencies. Biological samples generally have been collected annually.

Timing: North Sylamore Creek and Yocum Creek were sampled from 1996 to present. Sampling of the Buffalo River was discontinued in October 2005. Sampling of biological communities has generally been annual.

Targeted constituents: Constituents included nutrients, some major ions, and pesticides (mostly at the Yocum Creek site). Benthic macroinvertebrates, periphyton (attached algae), and fish communities generally have been sampled annually.
