Fixed surface-water sitesObjectives: The long-term goals of the NAWQA program are to describe the status and trends in the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation's surface- and ground-water resources, and to provide a sound, scientific understanding of the primary factors affecting the quality of these resources. The objectives associated with the fixed surface water site network were to describe the water quality of these sites and relate the water quality to environmental factors such as land use, basin and stream size, geology, and physiography.Approach: Fourteen sites were selected to represent a range of land use and physiographic settings and basin sizes in the Ozark Plateaus. Sites were sampled at least monthly for a number of water-quality constituents and annually for biological measures. Samples of bed sediment and biological tissue also were collected and analyzed for trace elements and organic compounds. Water-quality and biological data were described and analyzed using a number of statistical approaches such as box plots, descriptive statistics, non-parametric multiple comparison tests, correlation, and multivariate procedures. Timing: Sites were sampled in 1993-1995. Targeted constituents: Constituents included nutrients, pesticides and other organic compounds, trace elements (metals), bacteria. Fish, benthic macroinvertebrate, and periphyton (attached algae) communities were sampled and biota were counted and identified. | |
