The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred EAST OF THE SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS, about 345 Km (215 miles) SE of Bristol Island, South Sandwich Islands, or about 3945 km (2450 mi) south-southeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina at 11:10 PM MST, Jan 1, 2006 (Jan 02 at 5:10 AM local time in South Atlantic Ocean). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. This earthquake is located in a remote area and no damage or casualties are expected.
