Ship-wave-shaped wave clouds induced by Aleutian Islands

Clouds cover this true-color Terra MODIS image of the Bering Sea (top), Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, and the northern Pacific Ocean (bottom). As the clouds passed over the Islands, the islands forced the air to moved around them, and consequently caused wakes to form in the clouds, much like those that would form from a ship’s passage through water. This image was acquired September 6, 2002.
