| Purpose |
|
The purpose of the Division is to provide specialized investigative services in support of criminal justice agencies statewide through innovative programs and highly trained, dedicated personnel. Our goal is to provide an exceptional level of investigative support and expertise to local and federal law enforcement agencies in this state.
The Division is comprised of several sections: Major Crimes Section; Drug Enforcement Section; Arson/Explosives Section; Investigative Reports Section;
Service delivery is done through participation in a multitude of interagency task forces. Examples of some of these task forces we participate in are the child sex abuse multi-disciplinary teams, major crime teams, drug enforcement task forces, and interagency fire investigation teams. As a statewide law enforcement agency, we have the ability to mobilize resources for major criminal investigations. This may be a police officer-involved shooting; a major criminal investigation involving a large public government agency or entity; or other major crime incident requiring extensive investigative resources in a short time period.
A unique trait we have is even though there are detectives assigned to a particular specialized area, it is fairly common that detectives carry a caseload outside of their primary investigative assignment. For instance, a Detective assigned to a multi-disciplinary child abuse team who mainly investigates child sex abuse cases, may also serve on the major crime team in the community as well, and assist in a murder investigation. The same Detective may also be assigned to conduct internal criminal investigations of other law enforcement or local government entities upon request. The Detectives in the Major Crimes Section have also assisted our Drug Enforcement Detective on a drug case where resources are limited in a community. Vice-versa, Drug Enforcement Detectives are used on violent crime investigations when additional resources are requested. State Detectives are also responsible for criminal investigations in state institutions such as the Department of Corrections, Oregon Youth Authority, and like facilities.
The Division participates in local and federal interagency teams that enhances the sharing of information, reduces duplication of effort, and maximizes law enforcement resources in each community.
Major Crimes Section Detectives participate in 29 interagency major crime teams and 36 multi-disciplinary child sex abuse teams.
The Drug Enforcement Section participates in four (4) federal interagency Drug Enforcement Administration task forces and 4 local interagency drug task forces.
The Arson/Explosives Section participates in 15 local interagency fire investigation teams, serving 17 counties, and 3 federal arson task forces. Explosives technicians are located in Salem, Hermiston, and Central Point, and work in concert with other certified explosives technicians form other agencies, forming into interagency bomb squads.
