VOLUNTEER TO HELP PROTECT MT. BAKER

Mountain Stewards: Now in its 7th year of protecting mountain ecosystems

Mountain stewards enjoying a training day in the Mt. Baker National Recreation Area. The Mount Baker Ranger District and the North Cascades Institute (NCI) continue in partnership their efforts to conserve and restore Northwest landscapes through volunteer stewardship opportunities.

Mountain Stewards, one of two stewardship programs run by NCI, is an exciting way to become an active advocate for the Mount Baker area.

From late July through mid-September, Mountain Stewards hike three of the busiest trail systems in the Mt. Baker Ranger District: Heliotrope Ridge, Park Butte/Railroad Grade and Heather Meadows. These trails are popular for climbers attempting the summit of Mt. Baker, as well as day hikers looking for heartbreaking vistas. The sheer number of feet on these trails leaves them vulnerable to an enormous amount of impact. Mountain Stewards help others understand how to best soften the blow on these well-loved areas.

Volunteers in the Mountain Steward program have consistently proven their effectiveness and joy in helping educate fellow hikers and climbers about Leave No Trace ethics and Forest Service regulations. Only by continually gaining new perspectives and appreciating existing ones, can this program keep evolving.

We need your perspective!

Applications are accepted May through June. Volunteers must attend two trainings and commit to three days of educating hikers and climbers along the trail. The trail time takes place on weekends from end of July through mid-September. Shifts are during daytime hours, Friday through Sunday. Volunteers must be skilled in hiking and outdoor recreation, including snow travel, but are not required to travel on technical climbing routes.

If you are interested in becoming a Mountain Steward please contact the North Cascades Institute or the Mt. Baker Ranger District for more information at: (360) 856-5700.
