Lantern Walks

8pm - Wednesday, Saturday, & Sunday

Tidal Basin Welcome Tent

Want to see the cherry blossoms by a new light?  How about at night!  Join a Park Ranger every Wednesday, Saturday, & Sunday at 8:00pm during the National Cherry Blossom Festival, to learn more about the Japanese flowering cherry trees. Guided by the light of festive lanterns, a Ranger will lead you on a 1.5- mile walk around the Tidal Basin and through the history of the blossoms. Walks leave from the National Park Service Welcome Tent, located at the Tidal Basin Welcome Area, near the Paddle Boats. Reservations are required. Please register at the National Park Service Welcome Tent (same day reservations only).

Ever wonder why the Japanese flowering cherry trees came to Washington DC? Are you curious about the many varieties of cherry trees – such as the difference between Akebono and Yoshino?  Then join a Park Ranger for a program to learn about the cultural and natural history of our Capital’s natural treasures. Programs leave from the Tidal Basin near the entrance of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Welcome Tent at 10:30am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 5:00pm. The programs are 20-60 minutes in length.

Tidal Basin Welcome Area

Want to learn about the cherry blossoms?  Join Park Rangers at the Bloomin’ Junior  Ranger Tent, located at the Tidal Basin Welcome Area, from 11:00am-3:00pm, daily.  Hands-on activities include games, projects, and puzzles that teach children about the Japanese cherry trees, the country from which they came, and the national park that cares for them.  From 3:00pm-4:00pm, children can participate in a fun filled Junior Ranger Program and earn a Junior Ranger badge, presented by a very special guest! The program is aimed at kids between the ages of 6-12. 

 

Ranger led Bike Tours

If you want to enjoy the warm weather and experience the famous cherry blossoms, without all the traffic, you’ll love our Ranger led bike tours! Join Park Rangers every Saturday and Sunday from   1:00pm - 4:00pm for guided bike tours of the Nation’s Capital. No two tours are ever the same! All riders MUST provide their own bike, helmet, and water. All tours begin at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. 

The bike tour season begins during the National Cherry Blossom Festival and continues through the last Sunday of November (Saturday, March 29 – Sunday, November 30, 2008).

 

Cherry Chit-Chat Runs

Washington Monument Plaza

Lace up your runnin’ shoes!! Join a Park Ranger for a run through the cherry blossoms! Tour highlights include the natural and cultural history of the famous Japanese cherry trees. Tours begin at the Washington Monument plaza and follow a 3.5 mile route, which includes interpretive stops. Please bring your own water. Self-guided Audio Tours

Stop by the Tidal Basin or Thomas Jefferson Welcome Areas and pick up a self-guide tour brochure including three tours within the National Mall & Memorial Parks. As you take the tour, beginning Friday March 28th, be sure to call (202) 747-3465 on your cell phone and listen to Park Rangers present more information about the historic cherry trees!
