Tropical Storm Gaston brought extensive flooding to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia after barreling ashore with 60 mile-per-hour winds on August 29, 2004. This true-color image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite just after Gaston came ashore near McClellanville, South Carolina.

Gaston flooded parts of Virginia with up to ten feet of water, cut power to over 64,000 residences, collapsed at least one building in Richmond’s historical district, caused damage extensive enough to condemn 20 city blocks, and caused the deaths of at least five people across the state.
