Watershed Analysis

Watershed analysis is one of the four components of the Aquatic Conservation Strategy—part of the Northwest Forest Plan. The Strategy was developed to restore and maintain the ecological health of watersheds and their aquatic ecosystems.

Watershed analysis is a systematic procedure for characterizing the aquatic, riparian, and terrestrial features within a watershed. The focus of each watershed analysis includes the issues, values, and uses specific to the area. The issues form the basis for discussion of the interactions between land-use activities, the physical environment, and its biological components.

Watershed analysis is an analytical process, not a decision-making process. Managers can use the information and findings from a watershed analysis to develop project-specific proposals, and monitoring and restoration projects for a watershed. A detailed outline of the watershed analysis process can be found in Ecosystem Analysis at the Watershed Scale - Federal Guide for Watershed Analysis [PDF - 839K].

Resource Advisory Committees

Resource Advisory Committees (RAC) have been formed and have begun work toward recommending natural resource projects in Skagit, Whatcom, Snohomish, King, and Pierce Counties under the Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000.

CERCLA/Hazmat Cleanup Projects

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) process assesses site conditions, evaluates hazards to humans and the natural environment, determines the level of cleanup required and selects an appropriate cleanup alternative.
