General Agriculture

If you're interested in many different facets of agricultural and life sciences, then consider earning a general agriculture degree. This flexible program allows you to tailor a course of study to your individual interests, whether those interests are in production agriculture, health or natural resources.

Choose a primary concentration area and two secondary concentration areas from the College's other degree programs to create your own unique college experience.

Career Opportunities

A bachelor's of science degree in general agriculture from the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) will provide you with all the skills you'll need to succeed in a wide variety of agriculture careers.

Your tailored degree program will prepare you for many career fields. Some agriculture-related industries you might consider include:

• Operate your own farm or ranch, and produce the crops and livestock that feed the world. Or find employment with some of the largest and most respected agribusiness companies in the nation, such as Monsanto, Novartis and Pioneer Hi-Bred.
• Use your business skills to bring customers to your business. Help them find the products and inputs they need to be successful in their own businesses. Among the employers you might work for are multinational companies such as Anheuser-Busch, DuPont, John Deere and Purina Mills.
• Answer questions about some of today's most pressing agriculture, food and natural resource issues through research — for a public institution such as a university, or a state or federal government agency such as the Missouri Department of Conservation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
• Teach others about the same mysteries of life that fascinate you and help them to appreciate the world around them.

Research/Internship Opportunities

As a general agriculture student, your chances to gain real-world field experience through research and internships are as limitless as the courses you'll take.

Work side-by-side in the field or laboratory with CAFNR faculty and get hands-on experience with research from climate modeling and water quality management to wildfire prevention and genetically modified crops.

Opportunities exist for on-campus internships and part-time employment as lab technicians, both of which provide valuable experience, especially if you're interested in pursuing a professional career in the life sciences.

You are also encouraged to complete an off-campus summer internship. On-the-job training with private companies or government agencies will provide invaluable experience that will serve you well after graduation.

Get Involved on Campus

Want to have fun and develop your leadership skills and professional contacts at the same time? Then join one or more of the College’s student clubs and organizations. There are more than 30 to choose from, and each gives you the opportunity to apply what you’re learning in the classroom while making lifelong friends.

• Alpha Gamma Sigma: Alpha Gamma Sigma is a Professional Agriculture Fraternity that strives to help young men succeed in college by setting goals and following through with them. Our brotherhood helps men to grow together scholastically and socially. We help make the campus a little smaller by networking with men from smaller towns who are going into the same field of study. We sponsor a philanthropic event every year to help give back to the community that has helped us.

• Alpha Gamma Rho: The Men of Alpha Gamma Rho are always looking for qualified new members who are leaders in the agriculture field. Ag Rho prides itself on being the premiere Ag fraternity as well as one of the top fraternities at the University. This past year, we laid claim to several awards, such as Mizzou Homecoming King, Outstanding Greek Sophomore, Junior, Senior and President, just to name a few. We also are the reigning CAFNR Week Spirit Award winner. The leadership positions and networking possibilities are endless. • Alpha Zeta (professional agriculture fraternity): If you are a senior and have a 3.0 GPA or better, or a junior with a 3.2 GPA or better, this honorary society might be looking for you. Alpha Zeta is an honor and service society that upholds the virtues of scholarship, leadership, character and fellowship in all agricultural professions. Activities include a monthly event alternating service with fellowship. Participation is also requested for monthly meetings, initiation events and any national or regional events that present themselves throughout the year. Members of Alpha Zeta receive honors cords at graduation. Alpha Zeta is a great way to obtain leadership positions and get involved with CAFNR.

• CAFNR Ambassadors: CAFNR Ambassadors is a group of students who have the opportunity to work with CAFNR staff and faculty to help recruit students to CAFNR. The ambassador group also serves as the student face of CAFNR at many events throughout the year. Interviews are held during the winter semester of each year, and the ambassadors meet on a weekly basis. The ambassador team's mission is: To strive to be the best organization and individuals we can be in order to promote the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and bridge the high school and college experience through organization, effective training and functional committees.

• CAFNR Student Council: CAFNR STUCO, as it is called, includes representatives from every organization, class and degree program within CAFNR. It serves as a communications link between faculty and students in the College. The student council is a key group for advocating change and voicing student concerns. Members help promote agriculture, food and natural resources related professions and relate the importance of agriculture, food and natural resources to the consumer and the state. The Student Council hosts various activities for organizations and faculty to participate in, including Preview Mizzou, Fall Roundup, Adopt-a-Highway, Adopt-a-Family, Teacher Spotlight and Relay for Life. If you want to serve on CAFNR STUCO, you must be an elected representative from a CAFNR organization, or you can petition and run in the yearly elections to represent your class or major. • FarmHouse Fraternity: The FarmHouse fraternity promotes fellowship, encourages studiousness and inspires members to seek the best in their chosen lines of study and in life. Men elected to the membership are considered to be scholars of good moral character who are personable and promise to serve their fellow men and the world.

• Independent Aggies (GDI): Independent Aggies is a co-ed group of independent agriculture students that helps promote agriculture by assisting youth organizations with funding and learning events. Meetings are held monthly with a social event following the meetings. Other social activities include two dances per semester for high school scholarship funding, a float trip in the summer, tailgating at MU football games and a faculty appreciation barbecue in the spring to benefit St. Jude's. The only requirement of members is that they must be in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and pay a $10 membership fee.

• MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences): MANRRS is a professional organization that strives to help its members develop the skills necessary to excel in their educational careers and cultivate professional skills. As such, MANRRS members have the opportunity to network with other ethnic professionals in the fields of agriculture, natural resources and related sciences.

• Mizzou 4-H: If you want to get involved in the community or just take your 4-H experience to the collegiate level, consider Mizzou 4-H. Members volunteer at Camp Hickory Hill, 4-H State Shooting Sports Competition and 4-H State Congress. Members also develop an original teambuilding workshop and teach leadership skills to 4-H members across the state each year. Social activities and National Conferences offer travel and networking opportunities. The club is open to anyone on campus and there are no dues.

• Mizzou FFA Alumni: If you wish to continue FFA involvement, Mizzou FFA Alumni is the answer. Members assist with State FFA contests and convention activities, including orchestrating a workshop, stocking and working at a retail booth and launching t-shirts. In addition, Mizzou FFA Alumni organizes and sponsors the Chapter Officer Development Event (C.O.D.E.). Members also enjoy various social functions. Mizzou FFA Alumni cooperates with the National FFA Organization, Missouri FFA Association and local FFA chapters to promote agricultural education and the FFA.

• Sigma Alpha: Sigma Alpha is a professional agricultural sorority that promotes scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship among its members. We have been on the MU Campus since 2002 and are growing steadily. You'll find Sigma Alpha members standing out as leaders on their campuses and in the workforce. We are dedicated to the motto: Women Excelling in Agriculture.

• SNR Student Council: The School of Natural Resources Student Council is a group of students dedicated to involving others in School/University activities and improving the School. Some of the activities that are planned by the SNR Student Council include: graduation ceremonies; social events, such as the annual fall barbecue and Senior Send-off activities and educational programming like Field Day. The Student Council is always looking for new members who are willing to bring new ideas and events to better the School of Natural Resources.

• Tigers for Tigers: Mizzou Tigers for Tigers is a great organization for all new students and current students. As a group, the MT4T student chapter acts to raise funds to aid in the conservation of wild tiger populations, but we also do fun activities. In the fall we have Tiger Awareness month, which is packed full of events such as an art exhibit, Krispy Kreme fundraiser, and guest speakers, just to name a few. We meet twice a month, and it doesn't cost a dime to join. So come out and help us make sure there are wild tigers as long as there are Mizzou Tigers.
