Special Hiring Programs

The Centers for Medicare  & Medicaid Services offers a variety of special hiring opportunities. Please click on the links below to find out more detailed information on the purpose, the eligibility requirements and how to apply for each program.

2008 Summer Internship Program (SIP):  This is a 12-week program for current students.  The purpose of the Summer Intern Program is to enhance students' knowledge about CMS programs, mission, vision and goals.  Additionally, the program seeks to familiarize participants about Federal, State, and local health care programs serving underserved and uninsured populations.

2008 Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP): This is a 12-week Summer Internship program for college and university students to enhance students' knowledge about CMS programs, mission, vision and goals.

Emerging Leaders Program (ELP):  This highly selective program is a comprehensive, two-year, full-time employment and career development opportunity for recent graduates who have a superior academic record and a Masters or higher degree.

Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP):  This is a full-time, two-year training program offering Federal benefits as well as promotion opportunity.

Outstanding Scholar Program (OSP):  This is a special hiring authority established to fill entry-level administrative and professional positions at the GS-7 grade level, with excellent opportunities for advancement.

Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF):  The purpose of this program is to attract outstanding master's and doctoral-level students to the Federal service.

Selective Placement Programs (SPP):  These programs are organized action plans and procedures which provide the framework for Federal agency implementation of law and executive branch policy on the hiring, placement, and advancement of persons with disabilities, including disabled veterans, as well as rehabilitated offenders.

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP):  This is a planned and progressive, career-related student employment program.  The SCEP program is designed to provide a source of well-trained employees for career entry into the Federal workforce.

Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP): This is a short-term internship program designed to give students work experience.

Student Volunteer Program (SVP):  This program provides for a supervised, structured educational program that integrates classroom learning with productive work experience in a field related to a student's academic or career goals.

Veteran's Readjustment Appointment (VRA): The VRA is a special authority by which CMS can appoint an eligible veteran without competition.
