Facility Picture

The Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) is an integrated health care delivery system, offering a comprehensive array of medical, surgical, rehabilitative, primary, mental health and extended care to veterans in northern California. 

 

VANCHCS serves an area consisting of more than 377,700 veterans dispersed over a wide geographic area spanning approximately 40,000 square miles. The health system is comprised of a medical center in Sacramento; a rehabilitation and extended care facility in Martinez; seven outpatient clinics, a Substance Abuse Treatment Center in Oakland; and dental clinics in Vallejo, Sacramento, and Redding.


The Sacramento VA Medical Center is a 50-bed, state-of-the-art, inpatient facility offering a full range of comprehensive health care services including medical, surgical, primary and mental health care. The medical center, which is comprised of 28 medical-surgical beds, 12 TCU beds, 10 ICU beds, and a four room operating suite, also houses a cardiac catheterization lab, a gastrointestinal & endoscopy suite, angiography capability and 16,000 square-feet of research laboratory. The medical center offers a wide range of outpatient and diagnostic services, including mammography, MRI, CT, and PET scanning.
 

VANCHCS has two divisions, each with an Associate Director.  The Sacramento Valley Division is comprised of medical facilities in Sacramento, Chico and Redding, while the East Bay Division is comprised of medical facilities in Fairfield, Vallejo, Martinez and Oakland.

VANCHCS also holds 95 additional current affiliations with educational facilities to train over 350 students and interns in various health care professions including audiology, speech pathology, podiatry, dentistry, health science, pharmacy, nursing, psychology, social work, sonography, nuclear medicine and
optometry.


RESEARCH

VANCHCS' Research and Development (R&D) Program oversees protocols in the areas of human, animal and basic laboratory research. Research areas encompass: health systems, including health outcomes, quality, access, utilization, and cost; geriatrics; cancer; neuroscience including audiology, Alzheimer's Disease, cognitive neuropsychology and visual motor protocols; liver disease, heart disease; and endocrinology disorders including diabetes mellitus, cholesterol, and bone metabolism.


The R&D Program oversees research protocols at the Martinez Outpatient Clinic and Center for Rehabilitation & Extended Care and the Sacramento VA Medical Center. NCHCS collaborates with UC Berkeley and UC Davis at the Alzheimer's Disease Center located on the Martinez Campus.


Funding sources included the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, VA Merit Review, National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Neurological Disorders, state government and industry sponsorship.


A nine bed General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), developed through a partnership between VANCHCS and the University of California, Davis, is located at the Sacramento VA Medical Center. Designated as a GCRC by the National Center for Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health, the center offers an optimal setting to conduct state-of-the-art, safe and controlled inpatient and outpatient studies for adults and children. Clinical active projects range from Alzheimer's disease and AIDS to cancer and bariatric weight reduction.

AFFILIATIONS

VANCHCS has maintained an active affiliation with the University of California, Davis since 1975. Nearly 400 university residents (approximately 69 full time employee equivalent (FTEE)and over 100 medical students are trained at the Sacramento VA Medical Center, Martinez Outpatient Clinic and Center for Rehabilitation & Extended Care each year.
