ABOUT ATLANTA VAMC

The Atlanta VA Medical Center is located on 26 acres east of Atlanta in Decatur, Georgia with an operating nursing home care unit. The Atlanta VAMC also operates the Lawrenceville, Oakwood, Smyrna and East Point community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs).

The Atlanta VAMC is a tertiary care center that is dedicated to providing both primary and specialized outpatient health care, extended care, acute medical, surgical, intermediate and psychiatric care services with almost all major specialties and subspecialties represented. The facility also serves as a prosthetics treatment center, fabricating and supplying mechanical devices such as artificial limbs for patients within the states of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

The co-location of the VA Regional Office to include the National Cemetery Administration, has resulted in a strong One-VA collaboration on such importants issues as Freedom of Information Act requests for medical records, shared services, training and access to the facilities.

Type of Facility
The Atlanta VAMC is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. The Medical Center has 173 operational inpatient beds and 100 nursing home care beds. The services provided by the Nursing Home Care Unit include extended care rehabilitation, psycho-geriatric care, and general nursing home care.

Affiliations
The Atlanta VAMC has had an active affiliation with the Emory University School of Medicine for over 50 years as one of six Emory University affiliated hospitals. The Atlanta VAMC is approved for 124.65 medical resident positions in a variety of disciplines. Last year, 377 residents and 91 medical students rotated through the Atlanta VA. The majority of the Atlanta VA physicians also have faculty appointments at Emory University.

In the summer of 2005, the Atlanta VAMC launched the East Point community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC) in affiliation with Morehouse School of Medicine, and operated out of a temporary clinic location. The East Point CBOC relocated to a larger, permanent site in May 2006. The clinic provides comprehensive primary and mental health care services to approximately 8,000 enrolled veterans. In addition, VA and Morehouse work closely to collaborate on various academic teaching, research and clinical initiatives.

Special Programs

The research program involves over 400 projects, conducted by more than 140 principal investigators, four of which are prestigious VA Senior Career Scientists, with a total grant funding of more than $25 million from VA and non-VA sources. Projects include studies on the genetics of cancer and diabetes, development of new anti-HIV and anti-hepatitis agents, low vision devices and aids, growth factor interactions in lung development, and bone and mineral endocrinology.
