The book was designed for organic operations whose primary organic market is the US but who also have international sales. The full text of the NOP is included plus additional requirements that are mandatory for each of the other programs. Since the standards included in the book must be applied by all certifiers, it can be used as a universal reference.

Materials use is an important aspect of certification. This book annotates the NOP material list to indicate products that are prohibited or restricted by other programs. The appendix also includes the complete materials list for EU 2092/91, JAS, and IFOAM.
