Bicycling in Albuquerque
In 2006, Albuquerque was named one of "The 21 Best Cities for Cycling" in America by Bicycling Magazine. That's great news for alternative transportation in the Duke City.
Albuquerque has a number of programs in place to promote its extensive bikeway system and the safe use of it.
Bike Locker Program
The City has installed over 300 bicycle lockers at 23 locations in the Metro area. The City installs an average of 50 lockers per year. The purpose of this program is to provide secure bicycle parking to encourage bicycle commuting. Major employers that have taken advantage of the bike locker program include Intel, Honeywell, and the University of New Mexico. Call 311 for more information.
- The City produces a comprehensive bike map that provides information about the bikeway system, connections to public transit, and traffic codes as they pertain to bicycles.
- The map also includes rules of the road, safety information, and maintenance contact information.
Q-bike Program
The City is currently evaluating locations to implement the Q-bike program.
- It is a system of bicycle rental ports intended to fill gaps in the public transit system.
- People will pay a fee to use Q-bikes to get from one docking station to the next.
- Docking stations will be strategically located throughout Albuquerque. Learn More
Bridging the Gap!
- The City of Albuquerque is expanding the existing bikeway system to create a seamless bicycle network to reduce commute times.
- Citizen surveys will be conducted as part of the Comprehensive Bikeways and Trails Plan to determine where gaps exist within the system.
- Solutions to eliminating gaps range from curb cuts to grade separated crossings of obstacles such as the Rio Grande, arroyos, and interstate highways.
- Focusing efforts on closing the gaps in the existing bikeway system will help promote bicycling as a viable alternative mode of transportation.
