Trooper Frequently Asked Questions

 Question: Applicant is unable to attend the scheduled written and physical abilities test.  Can the applicant be rescheduled for a different test event?
 Answer: Yes.  The applicant will be scheduled to attend the next available testing.
 Question: When is the next test scheduled for Recruit Trooper? 
 Answer: Currently scheduled testing dates:
  • 10/11/08 - Canby High School - Canby Oregon
  • 11/01/08 - Sunridge Middle School - Pendleton Oregon  - no longer testing, must come to Canby
  • 11/15/08 - Crater High School - Central Point Oregon -- no longer testing, must come to Canby
  • 02/07/09 - Canby High School - Canby Oregon
  • 04/04/09 - Canby High School - Canby Oregon
 
Applicants must be approved to attend testing.
 Question: Applicant is currently in the military with an anticipated separation date of more than one year.  When should the applicant begin the process? 
 Answer: It is generally best to begin the process within one year prior to separation.
 Question: Applicant received notification of the written and physical abilities test that is scheduled in Salem.  The applicant lives out-of-state.  May the tests be administered locally?
 Answer: No.  However, we travel to Pendleton and Medford for testing to allow easier access for out of state applicants. 
 Question: Applicant is currently a law enforcement officer with another agent (in-state or out-of-state). Does OSP accept lateral transfers?
 Answer: Yes. Click here for more information.
 Question: If the applicant is offered employment, will he/she be able to pick a worksite?
 Answer: The Applicants will be given an opportunity to list their top five (5) choices or indicate they are willing to work anywhere.  The Department attempts to match applicant preferences with the existing vacancies.  With the amount of openings currently available, most offices have openings.
 Question: If selected, how soon will applicants know their assignment? 
 Answer: Applicants are given station assignments when selected as a Recruit.  This notification occurs approximately 30 days in advance of starting recruit school. 
 Question: What is the Recruit Academy like?
 Answer: Recruit School web pages are currently under construction.  Check back soon. 
 Question: Are relocation expenses paid? 
 Answer: Not for entry level recruits or laterals.  Upon promotion to Sergeant, relocation assistance is possible. 
 Question: What does the written test consist of?
Answer: Basic math, fractions, story problems, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
Question: What can I do to prepare for a career with OSP?
