The investigation into Saturday morning's fatal shooting involving Josephine County Sheriff's Office deputies is continuing. Per agreed upon protocols, the Oregon State Police is leading the investigation with the assistance of Josephine County Sheriff's Office, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety and Josephine County District Attorney's Office. The names of the deputies present during the shooting are being released, and further questions should be directed to the Josephine County District Attorney's Office.

On November 10, 2007, at 2:03 a.m., a 911 call was placed from the residence at 28351 Redwood Highway reporting that a male subject who was known to the caller had a gun and fired shots, threatening others. The following four Josephine County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) corporals and deputies responded to the scene:
  • Patrol Corporal Edythe Deubert, age 38, who has been with JCSO for over 8 years
  • Patrol Corporal Ray Webb, age 45, who has been with JCSO for over 8 years
  • Patrol Deputy John Auborn, age 38, who has been with JCSO for nearly 7 years
  • Patrol Deputy Shawn Shaw, age 36, who has been with JCSO for over 10 years

Upon arrival on scene at approximately 2:30 a.m. they were confronted by PAUL HARRISON CHESSER, age 66, who was armed with a handgun. They ordered CHESSER to put the firearm down numerous times but he refused, pointing it at the deputies several times. During the standoff, CHESSER pointed the handgun at one of the deputies and gun fire was exchanged.
CHESSER, who lives at the residence, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday by Dr. Olson of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office in Central Point. The autopsy confirmed CHESSER was struck twice entering his body through the left arm area.

Questions regarding the deputies' service with JCSO should be directed to Sheriff Gil Gilbertson at (541) 474-5120.

Additional questions related to this investigation should be directed at this time to Josephine County District Attorney Stephen Campbell at (541) 474-5200.
