OSP Seeking Applicants for Evidence Technician Positions in Newport, Klamath Falls, La Grande and Ontario
08/07/2007
Ms. Rebecca David
Evidence Technician Coordinator
Office: (503) 934-0263

The Oregon State Police (OSP) has received Legislative authorization to add four additional Evidence Technician civilian positions to strengthen the Department's investigative capabilities and help free up Troopers and Sergeants to work critical patrol-related duties. The deadline to apply for the four positions that will be at Newport, Klamath Falls, LaGrande and Ontario is August 23, 2007.

During the 2001 - 2003 biennium, the legislature failed to approve enough money to maintain the Evidence Technician Program. As a result, OSP used sworn personnel to manage evidence property rooms at the offices, which required removing troopers from full-time patrol duties.

Following the support of Governor Ted Kulongoski and legislative leadership in early 2006, OSP received approval from the state Emergency Board to put additional state troopers on the road in the coming months by allocating funds to hire ten new evidence technicians. The approved funding freed up sworn officers to go back on the road at nine locations around the state and allowed the Department to hire an Evidence Technician Coordinator to provide ongoing coordination, training and management for the program.

OSP Evidence Technician duties include:

* Property management including maintaining proper chain of custody; ensuring evidence and property is properly packaged, stored and lawfully released or disposed of; preparing evidence for submission to the crime laboratories; and preparing evidence for officers needing items checked out for court.
* Assisting on scenes to secure evidence collected and packaged by investigators, assisting with evidence form documentation and transporting evidence back to the evidence locker to maintain chain of custody.
* Property management documentation including reviewing all evidence submissions for accuracy and completeness, and maintaining the evidence locker computer database.
* Assist public and law enforcement personnel on matters regarding property and evidence.
* Provide assistance and training to law enforcement personnel on evidence-related procedural matters.

All applicants will be subject to a Computerized Criminal History and DMV check, as well as a thorough background investigation. Preference will be given for individuals with law enforcement (agency) experience.
