Sergeant Alan Gilbert
Criminal Investigations Division - Springfield
Office: (541) 726-2536

Oregon State Police (OSP) detectives are investigating the death of a Eugene-area young man following a shooting incident Sunday evening at Munsel Lake near Florence. No one has been arrested.

On June 24, 2007 at approximately 9:30 p.m. a group of four friends had just returned in a small boat to a private dock on Munsel Lake after an evening of fishing and shooting. The four friends were in separated groups of two walking across the dock and up a path towards a private residence located in the area of Martin Road near Munsel Lake Road. The victim, WESTON SCHOENER, age 21, from Eugene, was walking with a friend on the dock as the other two friends were ahead walking up a path when a small caliber rifle discharged as it was being carried by the friend walking with the victim.

SCHOENER was struck once in the back near the waistline.

OSP troopers from the Florence work site responded with emergency medical personnel from Western Lane Ambulance. When troopers arrived, SCHOENER's friends were administering first aid. Troopers secured the scene and firearms so medical personnel could be brought in to continue aid.

SCHOENER was transported to Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence where he died later during surgery.

OSP detectives from the Springfield Area Command office responded to the scene and conducted initial interviews. The investigation is continuing in conjunction with the Lane County District Attorney's Office.
