A joint law enforcement training exercise will be held this Thursday, May 3, at Oregon State University that will allow different police agencies to work together on emergency preparedness in a busy university environment.

Participating agencies include the Oregon State Police, OSU’s Office of Public Safety, the Corvallis Police Department, Benton County Sheriff’s Department, and the Oregon State Police SWAT team.

This training exercise originally was scheduled for this summer, but was moved up in light of the recent Virginia Tech shootings. The scenario for Thursday’s exercise will involve the report of an active shooter. Two vacant on-campus housing cooperatives – Reed and Heckart lodges – will be used in the training. They are located on Jefferson Street just east of 30th Street.

News media who would like to attend the training exercise should meet at the corner of 30th and Jefferson for a briefing by OSP Lt. Phil Zerzan promptly at 10 a.m. All media and spectators must remain outside of the taped areas during the scenario, which will be repeated by different officers through noon. A post-event debriefing will take place at approximately noon at 30th and Jefferson (or in nearby West Dining Hall if it is raining).

Among those who can respond to questions will be Lt. Phil Zerzan, station commander for the Oregon State Police office on the OSU campus; Dave Hensley, public information officer for the Corvallis Police Department; and Ellen Taylor, director of Counseling and Psychological Services at OSU.

Reporters attending the training are asked to park well away from the site of the exercise. Best options for parking are in the Peavy Hall and Richardson Hall parking lots on the west side of 30th Street, or by the Truax Indoor Center.

This is one in a series of annual multi-agency training exercises that in the past have involved numerous scenarios, including hostage situations, explosive devices, mass casualties and shootings – all in an effort to provide law enforcement training and better prepare the campus for emergency situations.

If you have additional questions, contact Lt. Phil Zerzan, at 541-737-3010, or Mark Floyd of OSU News and Communication Services at 541-737-0788.
