A Prineville-area man was arrested Wednesday morning by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers after he attempted to elude officers for twenty minutes on Highway 97 and Highway 140W in Klamath Falls area at speeds occasionally over 120 mph. The successful deployment of spike strips was instrumental in ending the suspect's attempt to elude.

On April 25, 2007 at approximately 9:50 a.m. OSP Senior Trooper Ryan Niehus was working overtime enforcement in a construction work zone on Highway 97 about seven miles north of Klamath Falls when a white 2004 Dodge pickup was detected traveling 80 mph in a 55 mph area. Senior Trooper Niehus activated his patrol car emergency lights to stop the pickup. The driver, LUCAS THOMAS BECHTEL, age 25, from Prineville, pulled onto the shoulder and slowed but then sped off southbound attempting to elude the trooper at speeds over 120 mph.

Near milepost 269, OSP Senior Trooper Kevin Roach deployed spike strips, successfully spiking the pickup's right front tire. As the pickup attempted to elude southbound, the right front tire shredded and eventually came off the rim. Additional OSP troopers with officers from Klamath County Sheriff's Office and Klamath Falls Police Department provided assistance as the pickup continued southbound, exiting off in Klamath Falls and over to Highway 140 where it headed westbound from the city.

Approximately fifteen miles west of Klamath Falls, BECHTEL pulled over near milepost 55 and surrendered at 10:10 a.m.

BECHTEL was lodged in Klamath County Jail on the following charges:
  • Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle
  • Three (3) misdemeanor Fail to Appear warrants out of Crook County
  • Reckless Driving
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person (5 counts)
  • Criminal Mischief (3 counts related to damage to area highways caused by driving on the right front rim)
  • Tampering with Evidence (BECHTEL attempted to swallow less than an ounce of marijuana)
  • Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended
