Newport Trooper Receives OSP "DUII Enforcement Officer of the Year" Award
04/24/2007
Lieutenant Gregg Hastings
Public Information Officer
Office: (503) 731-3020 ext. 247

An Oregon State Police trooper assigned to the Newport Area Command office was recognized last week for his DUII enforcement efforts at the 12th annual DUII Multi-Disciplinary Impaired Driving Training Conference held April 20th and 21st in Tigard, Oregon. The Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force presented their annual awards of excellence to various organizations, groups, and individuals who made a significant contribution to deterring impaired driving in Oregon during 2006.

One of the awards is presented to an officer or supervisor active in DUII enforcement or the supervision of an active/innovative DUII enforcement team. The recipient is usually someone who is looked upon by his/her peers as setting an example for other officers to follow in the efforts against DUII. The "DUII Enforcement Officer-of-the-Year" award is presented to a sworn police officer from a city police department, county sheriff's office, and the Oregon State Police.

OSP Trooper Bryan Fitch, age 36, is a 5-year veteran with the Oregon State Police. Since joining the Department in December 2001, Trooper Fitch's OSP career was interrupted in 2003 when he was one of over a hundred troopers laid off due to budget cuts. Following his layoff, Trooper Fitch remained in the Lincoln County-area where he found employment with Lincoln City Police Department until he was hired back with OSP six months later.

"Trooper Fitch has developed into a well rounded, hardworking, dedicated OSP trooper who takes a lot of pride in the quality and quantity of his work," said Lieutenant Kelly Collins, OSP Newport Area Commander. "Not only is he at the top of this office in activities but he is a very experienced truck inspector, teaches at our department's recruit school, and works closely with the media."

In 2006, Trooper Fitch arrested 72 people for DUII, an increase of nearly six times from the previous year when he had 14 DUII arrests. Trooper Fitch was personally responsible for over one-third of the DUII arrests made by troopers assigned to the Newport Area Command office.
