Oregon State Police troopers arrested a Klamath Falls-area man Saturday on numerous charges including Attempted Murder related to an injury traffic crash on Highway 97 about 1 1/2 miles north of Klamath Falls. The two victims, a mother and daughter from Yakima, Washington only received minor injuries after their passenger car was intentionally struck from behind at high speed by the suspect.

On April 7, 2007 at approximately 9:25 a.m., a passenger car driven by MARTHA A. NORANJO-URIEBE, age 42, with her 10-year old daughter, TANIA CAMARENA, both from Yakima, Washington, was northbound on Highway 97 near milepost 269. According to witnesses, the passenger car was traveling about 55 mph when a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by STANLEY SLEEPER, age 56, from Klamath Falls, was approaching from the rear at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

In what investigators believe to be an intentional act directed at complete strangers, the Chrysler PT Cruiser crashed into the back of the victim's passenger vehicle sending it across the southbound lane and off the highway. The victim's vehicle rolled about five times and continued through tall grass before stopping partially submerged in a canal. Both occupants were using safety restraints and received minor injuries. Citizens who stopped at the scene helped them get out of their vehicle.

The PT Cruiser drove off the northbound shoulder and came to a stop in a bordering field. SLEEPER was using safety restraints and received minor injuries.

All three people were transported by ambulance to Merle West Medical Center in Klamath Falls where they were treated and released.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, assisted by OSP detectives, took SLEEPER into custody and lodged him in Klamath County Jail for:
  • Attempted Murder (two counts)
  • Driving Under the Influence of Drugs
  • Reckless Driving
  • Criminal Mischief in the First Degree

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Klamath County District Attorney's Office. No additional information will be released pending the suspect's initial court appearance.

Questions regarding an arraignment should be directed to the district attorney's office Monday.
ODOT assisted at the scene. The highway was not closed.
