Then and Now
State Traffic Department & Department of State Police

Forerunners of the Oregon State Police were members of the State Traffic Department, some of whom are pictured above. There were about fifty men assigned throughout the state. January 1997 Graduating Class.

Uniforms

The uniform of the thirties is shown above.  By the mid-forties, the campaign hat made a brief appearance. The "Smokey" hat made a comeback, replacing the garrison cap, in 1972 and remains standard issue today.

Badges
These were the badges worn by state traffic officers and "prohi-agents" before their organizations were disbanded and the badges replaced by the five-pointed star of the State Police.
