An Oregon State Police (OSP) radio technician out of Central Point was announced as one of 14 national nominees for a prestigious award from the Association of Public-Safety Communications Official International (APCO).

OSP Radio Technician WALT SCHIMKE was selected by APCO as one of 14 nominees for the APCO "RF Technologist of the Year" award presented to public safety communications personnel who have demonstrated the highest levels of professional conduct and performance.

SCHIMKE, age 44, has worked for OSP out of the Central Point area for ten years and is available around-the-clock to provide technical support in seven southern Oregon counties. Due to the vast geographical area and diverse terrain he encounters in varied weather conditions, he may have to use snow cats, snowmobiles, snow shoes, and airplanes to reach and check some of the remote radio sites used to help keep public safety employees and others talking to one another.

"Walt is very deserving of this nomination," said OSP Superintendent Timothy McLain. "His expertise, dedication, professionalism and passion for communications have made the telecommunicator's job easier and helps keep our public safety workers safe."

This year's "RF Technologist of the Year" award winner is from Mobile, Alabama. Awards were also presented to individuals in award categories for "Telecommunicator of the Year", "Communications Center Director of the Year", "Line Supervisor of the Year", "Information Technologist of the Year", and "Trainer of the Year".

APCO International is the world's largest organization dedicated to public safety communications for more than 70 years. The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International (APCO) is a member driven association of communications professionals that provides leadership; influences public safety communications decisions of government and industry; promotes professional development; and, fosters the development and use of technology for the benefit of the public.
