Preliminary information from the Memorial Holiday weekend indicates the lowest number of traffic fatalities since 1970 based upon Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) holiday fatal traffic toll statistics when ODOT began tallying holiday traffic fatality numbers. This year's information is based upon known fatal traffic fatalities from 6:00 p.m., May 23, through 11:59 p.m., May 26, 2008.

The single known traffic fatality occurred Friday evening, May 23rd, near Lebanon when a 51-year old woman died after the car she was riding in left Santiam Highway and crashed into a tree. Linn County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the crash that seriously injured her 47-year old husband who was driving the car. Alcohol is a possible contributing factor in the crash.

Last year was the deadliest Memorial Holiday weekend period since 1982. Prior to this year, the fewest Memorial Holiday weekend traffic fatality statistics occurred twice in 2001 and 1993 when two people died. The highest number of traffic fatalities during this holiday period happened in 1979 when thirteen people died.

Increased patrols and participation in traffic safety enforcement campaigns by Oregon State Police, county sheriff offices and city police departments will continue as part of the ongoing national "Click It or Ticket" campaign through June 1st.

Preliminary enforcement statistics during this year's Memorial Holiday period show Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers arrested 79 people for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, down slightly from last year when troopers reported 88 DUII arrests. OSP offices reporting the highest number of DUII arrests were:
  • Klamath Falls Area Command – 10 DUII arrests
  • Bend Area Command – 9 DUII arrests
  • Central Point Area Command – 8 DUII arrests
  • Springfield Area Command – 6 DUII arrests
  • Grants Pass work site – 6 DUII arrests
  • Roseburg Area Command – 6 DUII arrests

OSP troopers also issued over 2,100 speed-related citations, and more than 300 citations and 200 warnings for adult and child safety restraint violations. Troopers assisted 735 disabled motorists along our highways and responded to 127 traffic crashes. During last year's Memorial Holiday weekend period, troopers assisted over 430 disabled motorists and responded to 107 reported traffic crashes.
