What is the COOP Program?

The Cooperative Weather Observer Program is an extensive network of volunteer weather observers (>12,000) across the U.S. that voluntarily collects information such as temperature, daily precipitation, soil temperature, evaporation, wind movement, agricultural data, snowfall, river stages, lake levels, and atmospheric phenomena. The National Weather Service supplies the equipment, and the observers collect the data and relays it to the local National Weather Service office, where it is sent to the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC to be permanently archived.

Awards

The National Weather Service shows it's appreciation to the network of observers, by presenting several awards each year. These awards include the Thomas Jefferson, John Campanius Holm, and the Length of Service award, among others.

The Thomas Jefferson award is the highest award presented to volunteer observers and only 5 are presented annually. To be eligible for this award, the candidate must have received the John Campanius Holm award at least five years prior to nomination, and must still be performing duties in an outstanding manner.

The John Campanius Holm award is very prestigious and is granted to 25 observers annually for outstanding accomplishments in the field of meteorological observations.

Length of Service awards are presented to individual Cooperative Observers at 5 year increments, beginning at the 10 year anniversary. Institutional awards are also presented to recognize businesses and corporate groups, but only in 25 year increments.

The COOP Photo Album

We have made many presentations in the last few years to members of our observing family. Please take a look through our album to see the accomplishments of our COOP observers.
