Police Maintenance Standards
Where can I find the rules for Police Officer Maintenance Standards?
Administrative Rule: 259-008-0065 *.

What are the requirements for Police Officer Maintenance Standards?
  • Maintain current first aid/CPR certification.
  • Every three (3) calendar years complete 84 hours training in the following areas:
    • 8 hours annual firearms or use of force training (24 hours total)
    • If certified at supervisory level or above, complete 24 hours (of the 84 total hours) in leadership/professional training
    • Remainder of the 84 hours in General Law Enforcement training, recommended, but not limited to, subject areas of Law and Legal, Ethics and Communication, Investigations, Survival Skills, Child Abuse, Sex Abuse, and Elder Abuse or as determined by agency head.

How is Training Reported?
The F-6 Attendance Roster is the only form that will allow training to be credited to each of the required maintenance training categories.

During the three-year reporting period, report training and First Aid/CPR expiration dates on an F-6 roster.  Training reported on an F-6 will be entered into the officer’s record by title and course hours, and credited to the appropriate maintenance category.

When is Maintenance Training Due?
Officers receiving their basic certification between January 1 and June 30 each year will have an initial maintenance training deadline of December 31st of the third calendar year. Officers receiving their basic certification between July 1 and December 31 each year will have an initial maintenance training deadline of December 31st of the fourth year. For example, an officer first certified on April 15, 2005 would have until December 31, 2007 to complete initial maintenance training. An officer first certified on October 15, 2005 would have until December 31, 2008 to complete initial maintenance training.

Officers receiving supervisory, management or executive certification will not be required to complete the leadership portion of the maintenance training until the next 3-year period.

New rules recently adopted make provision for maintenance training requirements for officers on approved leave from their agencies.

How will agencies know if officers have not completed their maintenance training?
After December 31 each year, DPSST will notify agencies of the officers whose DPSST records indicate have not completed the training, based on the F-6 rosters submitted.  Agencies will then have 60 days to complete an F-15M-Police form for those officers.

What if the maintenance training is not completed and reported by December 31st of their third year?
DPSST will recall the certification(s) of any officer who does not complete and report the maintenance training in the required time.

The Frequently Asked Questions sheet discusses this process in more detail.  The recall status is removed from the officer’s record when the agency reports the required training and submits a letter explaining why the training was not completed in the required time period.
