Wildlife - Bison

BisonThe Bison, whose common name is "buffalo," is an impressive herbivore with a huge head and massive shoulders, so heavy up front that its hindquarters look relatively puny. Standing some 65 to 80 in. at the shoulder, the bison weighs up to one-half ton (for females) to three-quarters of a ton (for males). Its coat is dark brown and shaggy hair covers its head, forelegs, hump and shoulders. Short, round, blackish horns curve out and up, above the ears. A single calf is usually born from April to June, and may weigh from 30 to 40 lbs. It will lose its reddish coat in about three months. The Bison live for about twenty-five years.
