Electronics Program

Electronics Program

The electronics program is responsible for supporting all equipment systems needed to provide the observational, forecast and warning products generated by the National Weather Service.

With the implementation of the WSR-88(D) Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD), Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) and Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS), the electronics program is intimately involved in keeping these systems operating together and within established specifications. The new technology integrated into these systems furnishes weather service personnel with additional tools to analyze and predict changing weather conditions in a more timely and accurate manner.

The electronics program has personnel located in the regional office and at six field offices. The field office staff is involved in quality control of field office systems and electronic support, office relocations, equipment relocations, new equipment acceptances, and next-level technical support. The regional office staff consists of the Electronic Program Manager, two Regional Maintenance Specialists and a Regional Systems Analyst. Whether it is obtaining a hard-to-find part, answering a technical question, coordinating with other regional offices or National Weather Service Headquarters, the electronics program is there to support the warning, forecast, and observational mission of the National Weather Service.
