River Stages and River Flood Products

Important information regarding flood products.
  • Flood Warnings (product header FLW) may be issued for river forecast points or for longer term inundating flooding for counties.
  • Flood Statements (FLS) may be issued for urban and small stream flooding, or as a follow-up to Flood Warnings.
  • Flash Flood Warnings (FFW) and Statements (FFS) are issued for sudden flooding, usually localized and related to thunderstorms. Flash flood products (FFW and FFS) are not located on this page but can be found on the watch/warning page of this site.

Historical Flooding

Major flooding occurred in the Lower Ohio Valley in March of 1997, resulting in several fatalities and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. See our  post-mortem of the 1997 flood  for details.
The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1993 was one of the most catastrophic flood events in American history.
