ARC Annual Conference to Highlight Role of Telecommunications in Region's Development

WASHINGTON, September 26, 2003—Telecommunications and the future of Appalachian communities is the theme of the Appalachian Regional Commission's 2003 conference, to be held October 15–16 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia.

Hosted by the Commonwealth of Virginia in partnership with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, the conference will help participants understand how advanced telecommunications technology is transforming the way businesses, governments, educational institutions, and development agencies are doing their work, and how to take better advantage of it. Those expected to attend include state and local officials involved in economic and community development, chamber of commerce staff, business leaders, educators, health and social service administrators, and others working to improve Appalachia's future.

The morning conference sessions will bring together a group of experienced practitioners who will share their insights on the practical ways in which telecommunications can enhance quality of life in rural communities. The afternoon sessions will showcase specific projects applying these approaches.

"Smart use of emerging technologies is key to leveling the playing field for rural areas," said Virginia Governor Mark R. Warner, ARC's 2003 states' co-chair. "This conference will provide a wealth of practical knowledge that will help Appalachian communities move forward on the information highway."

ARC Federal Co-Chair Anne B. Pope noted that "today's knowledge-driven economy depends on the Region's citizens mastering information technology tools to capitalize on emerging economic opportunities. This conference will demonstrate how those tools can be used—and are being used—to benefit all sectors of the community and to promote and sustain economic growth."

The conference registration fee is $150.00 and includes all meals and conference materials.
